Fungus in the Garden

Summer time brings with it some “Not so Nice”
things in the garden and yard.  So today I’ll
explain what to worry about and what to ignore.

Plus a fun little video about my new nursery.

But first . . .

Japanese Maples at “Dirt Cheap Prices”

Hey, I am going to quit selling my
Backyard Nursery System for a while.  I’ve got too many
other things going on right now.  But since Japanese
Maple buying season is right around the corner, I want
to give you a chance to grab a copy now before I stop
selling it.   The  price is only $37.00

Dirt Cheap Prices:

As an example, I’ve ordered 1,000 of these for this fall.
Japanese Maples only $1.35 each!

People keep asking me; “Mike, how’s the new nursery
coming along?”

It’s coming along fine, as a matter of fact we are
having a “Shindig” at my nursery next month for all
the members of the Backyard Growers Messge Board.
Here’s a short movie I think you’ll enjoy:

So . . . What’s all this stuff about “Not so Nice”
things about summertime in the garden.

Fungus!  That’s what.  Or should I say Fungi?

Summertime brings hot weather and high humidity
in many parts of the world.  High Humidity brings all
kinds of Fungi that really scare or confuse gardeners.

First of all you get really yucky looking piles of
fungi on top of the mulch in your flower beds.  Most
of these fungus out breaks are harmless and as soon
as the humidity is gone they disappear.  But there is
one that can actually do some minor, but annoying damage
to your house.  It’s called shotgun fungus and it
actually explodes and splatters your house with tiny
brown specs.  I did a video about it a while back:
https://mikesbackyardnursery.com/?p=82

The next thing we to talk about is Powdery Mildew.
Powdery Mildew is another fungus that gets on the leaves
of certain plants like dogwoods and deciduous azaleas.
It appears as a white powder that turns the leaves
white in color.  It doesn’t do serious damage, but
it does make the plant look bad.

Gardens Alive is a company that sells environmentally
friendly products and recommends this product for summer
pests: http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=2821

They also recommend the same product for lawn diseases,
like that crazy orange fungus that gets all over your
shoes or bare feet when you walk through the grass.

Enjoy your summer and don’t let these pesky pests
get you down!

Our older evergreen azaleas have white stuff (fungus?) on the branches. It’s spreading, and killing the plants slowly. Can they be saved?

      Barb,

It could be some kind of scale insect, you can google that. Or it could just be lichens. https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=384314
