Japanese Maple Grafting DVD, three people get it free!
Discover how to grow beautiful Japanese maples like this at home!
Grafting your own Japanese maple trees really isn’t difficult to do once you know how. The actual act of grafting is easy, but there are a lot of little things that determine how successful you are in your efforts. Things like timing, temperature, how warm should the root stock be, how warm should the scion wood be, what time of the year is ideal for grafting etc.
Japanese maples are one of the most desired and intriguing plants in the plant kingdom. For us to be able to reproduce these beautiful creatures at will is pretty exciting.
In order to graft a Japanese maple tree the first thing you need are one or more seedlings that you can graft onto. The seedling that you use has to be in the same Japanese maple family as the desired variety that you are trying to create. Most Japanese maples are in the acer Palmatum family. Acer meaning a maple tree, Palmatum being a specific kind of Japanese maple.
Japanese maples, or even Japanese red maples are quite easy to grow from seed. I am producing a new “How to DVD” in which I will not only teach you exactly how to grow Japanese maples from seed, but I will show you all the tricks to successfully graft these beautiful plants.
Grafting is a winter sport. Typically grafting is done in January and February. The seedling is stored outside where it is cold, then two to three weeks before you start grafting the seedling is move indoors where it is nice and warm, around 70 degrees. It takes 10 to 14 days for the dormant rootstock (seedling) to come out of dormancy. Once the rootstock starts to break dormancy, that’s the ideal time to make your graft.
The scion, which is just a fancy name for a cutting, is left outside, still attached to the tree from which it is going to be removed right up until the day that you are going to graft. In other words, on the day that you make your graft, you want the rootstock just coming out of dormancy, but the scion still very much dormant.
Sound confusing? I know it sounds that way, but it really is much simpler than that which is why we are making a DVD about this process

Hi Mike, Started work as a gardener two days after leaving school at the age of fifteen at our local cemetery. This was were l got the bite for gardening, the smells, watching seedlings l had planted grow. It has been in my blood ever since. I am now 64 years old and it has never left me, if anything the bite has gotten bigger. I got my first ACER fivers ago, l must have done something right as it is doing so well a beautiful bush some seven feet tall now. I have this year bought another five different Acers,I am now besotted with them and would love to learn all l possible could about grafting these beautiful bushes. Would just love to win one of your FREE DVDs on this subject. I live in the North of England, Middlesbrough they say if you can live up here you can live any where in the world as it so cold most of the time. Thank you for letting me enter this competition Mike.
Thanks for everything, how can I by DVD?
Vardan,
Details on the now complete DVD are here. http://freeplants.com/graft-japanese-maples.html
I have appreciated your you tube videos so much. It turns out I have my Dad’s green thumb, I just started a little later! Seeing what I can grow or propagate has been so much fun. Thank you for the wealth of “easy-to-understand,” information that you share with all of us!
I love having Japanese Maple Trees coming up from seed all on their own in our from yard.
Hi Mike, Your info is great and I have kept all your emails, ordered your $47 program but it seems so overwhelming and I can’t find the motivation to start! You make it sound easy… At this point I am very frustrated. I enjoy planting and of course enjoy making some cash yet I feel frozen when it comes to beginning it all, sounds ridiculous right?. I have plenty of acreage and believe I would do very well (even though you do not need the land) so wish me luck in reading everything over yet again and this time actually starting.
L.
Your comments to me are not at all unusual. Lots of people feel that way. Think really, really small, one square foot, then then next, then the next. If you do that you’ll find these very simple and easy to do. I don’t normally tell me to think smaller, but when you are just starting out it makes it much easier to manage mentally. Worst mistake at all you can make is to do nothing, or try and get your head around the whole thing at one time. Take it one small bite at a time. -Mike McGroarty http://freeplants.com/wanted.htm
Thanks for the chance to win a DVD, watching your videos I feel like I’ve already won. You have so much knowledge about the plant world, everyone in your audience is a winner just by watching ! Thanks again Mike
Thanks Jim,
I truly appreciate your kind comments.
I love the art of grafting trees! Its so exciting!. Ive never been able to successfully accomplish it myself but the thought of it fascinates me. I cant wait until the day that I successfully graft my first tree :}
I grew a beautiful weeping Jap Maple (variety Dissectum) once. Absolutely stunning !!!
Thank you for all your free information. Not many people like you to help us out without a charge. I know it is a little late but I have my Japanese Maple seed soaking getting ready to plant. Thanks again for all your information
Enter me into the draw, if it’s not too late. It would be great to get the DVD.
Truly the most desirable plant in any landscape!
I hope the selection is random and not who puts the best marshmallows in the hot chocolate, so put me in for the free DVD. But whatever, thanks for all the giving to us plant grower Mike.
Duane, the selection truly is random. The three winners have been notified. Thanks for asking.
One of my favorite trees along with dogwoods. Didn’t know you could graft them, or grow from seed.
I have three, two in containers. How long can they be in a container before transplanting into the yard?
Would like a copy of your DVD to learn how. Thanks for the opportunity.
Helen
Helen,
You can keep a plant in a container indefinitely as long as it is happy. Containers must be fertilized, but very carefully, they must be watered, but especially for Japanese maples they can’t be too wet. And if you’re in a colder zone they really should be planted for more winter protection. My contention is that plants are always happier and safer in the ground.
mike you have the best cite on the internet it has realy helped me have a great garden thanks a million
Thanks Bill, I appreciate you saying that.
Do you have any DVD’s for sale at this time?
Benito, the DVD is now for sale on this site.
I love to grow Japanese Maples. I have at least 7 in my small apartment type garden. I need several more. Any help would be appreciated!!

Walt Kowalik
Walter, you can find a link to detailed instructions on growing from seed here: http://www.freeplants.com/growing-japanese-red-maples.htm

i love japanese maples ,only been able to afford one.i would love to be able to graft some of these trees
Count me in this sounds terrific
I always thought that Japanese Maples look like they were soft and fuzzy. I especially like the ones with feather like leaves.
If the picking is random, I may have as good a chance as any. Please count me in as having hope!
Love Japanese Maples. There is a Japanese Maple nursery about 15 min from our lake house. She has a tremendous selection of maples, various colors, leaf shapes, and sizes, but some are quite pricey. I would love to learn how to graft maples myself through your instructional DVD. Thank you for all the gardening knowledge you share with your readers.
Many thanks,
Kitty
Beautiful. My favorites. Can’t have enough of them.
Always wanted to learn how to propagate them. But not for sale. Old Persian poet Omar Khayam says: “Poor the ones who sell wine. Because for the money they get there is nothing better that can be purchased anyway!
Adnan
I would love a copy of this DVD. I have always wanted to learn how to graft. My husband would too. My father in law use to know how but he passed away before we could learn from him. Thank You Very Much for considering me for this.

Wouldn’t I just LOVE to have that DVD! It would be so nice to see my efforts to grow trees materialize – especially with such a lovely tree as the Japanese Maple.
I am planning to plant quite a few redbud trees to sell later this year and would love to learn how to graft Japanese Maples to use in my landscape design also! Thanks for the many helful and entertaing letters!
Florida is a bit too warm for Japanese Maples. Could I interest you in some Nellie Stevens Holly shrubs?
Mike, Thanks for the offer. Like you said, it sounds confusing and I am confused. But after reading it several more times and a couple cups of coffee, I think I have the concept. I’m sure your DVD will make it perfectly clear! Now to understand the grafting process.
Love watching your video’s, you have some lovely plants and great information.
Thanks For all you do!
Jean
This is just the thing I want to do in my new greenhouse. I’ve just retired and want to start a new business for my grandson.

Thanks Mike for your efforts
Ron
I really enjoy your videos and the way you explain things. I have always wanted to grow a Japanese Maple and would like the DVD you are offering.
Mike, I am a floor-covering specialist (I work at a carpet store), however, my passion is plants. Years ago, I started bringing my plants into the store for the winter months. I had so many people asking to buy them, I decided, “why not”. I have become known as the carpet lady that sells plants. I live in the country and access to my home is way off the beaten path, therefore it is hard to sell from home. I would however like to be entered in your contest. I feel I could put that information to good use. I have been known to sell maple, walnut, and mimosa (or promosa, as Grandma called them) trees — right from this little ol’ carpet store. Thanks’ for all your info, God bless you and yours, Sheila in Napoleon, Mo.
Mike, I love japanese mapless. I’ve been growing them from seeds , green only reds never seem to make it, for years.
Thanks for all of your advice..
You’ll be getting part of my income tax return this year. I enjoy your straight-talk, shoot from the hip style, videos. You’re a blessing to us all!
These comments sound a bit fake. There are no negative comments here.
I could sure use as much help and information as possible to get more of my plants to grow – bigger, better and faster – the 6 million dollar / BIONIC plant. The video would be a great help.
I’ve been following your works. Every thing has worked. cant wait to get this dvd
I love Japanese Maples. In front of my house there are two that I planted many years ago. It would sure be great fun to learn how to graft trees.
I enjoy learning new things especially with trees and plants. I love new plants and growing trees
Wow, I would love to have this DVD, also I would love to learn to do any grafting.
Mike,
I am great fan of yours and have always admired you what you do…you share your great knowledge, experience, resources with everyone and I am sure every one appreciates this..you have inspired thousand of people..you are my nominee for CNN Hero…i would buy your dvd whenever you sell this….May God bless you always….
please inter me. Thanks.
Hi Mike, Bonsai enthusiasts (like me) love Japanese maples but cannot accept an obvious graft bulge or “knuckle”. Is there anyway to minimize this result in the process?
J. With a red seedling you won’t have a graft union. If you want one of the more interesting and rare Japanese maples you can try rooting them by cutting. Not that easy, but it can be done. Or trying using this method. http://mikesbackyardnursery.com/2012/05/clam-shell-air-propagator/# You can buy the clamshells at http://airpropagator.com
I love your newsletters and info!
My daughter, who is a first-time stay-at-home mom thinks growing these little beauties might be a source of a bit of income for her and her familly. However, I am the one with the land for her to do it on, so I am throwing my hat in the ring and hoping you pick my name to win the DVD! And, by the way, I love, love, love planting trees. Tossing all the little maple and redbud seedlings that pop up around my yard is always difficult, so I pot some of them and give them away.
Hello Mike, Have you had success grafting Coral Maples? Great site. Thanks.
Perry,
Coral Bark Maple is in the Acer palmatum Japanese maple family so it should be easy to graft to just about any Japanese maple seedling.
I just love all your newsletters and want to learn more!
Pick me please and I will be very happy, you don’t want me to be sad, do you?
Bonsai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would love to have DVD.
I have a redbark maple that the end of the limbs keep dying and turning grey. I have to trim them back ever so often. What causes this problem
I recently received a degree in horticulture and would love to learn more about your grafting techniques!
At 75 this year, I don’t have much time to learn new things. I keep trying and this would help.

I have a degree in horticulture and love plants and flowers and find your explanation of propagating plants to be the simplest and easiest to understand of anybody I’ve ever heard. And over the years I’ve heard quiet a few. You make it easy for the people that don’t understand. When you get done talking, “they get it”. Great job.
here is my hat so please fill it with your amazing DVDS!
Thank You Mike you ARE Awesome!
Please put me in your drawing. Mike will Japanese Maple grow in a zone 3?
One of the many skills I have ALWAYS wanted to learn! I would love the chance to learn this! PLEASE PICK ME!!
Hi all, greetings from Ireland. I hope I win and learn how to grow those beautiful trees over here. Thanks Mike for all the advice you give
thanks for all the helpful information and for a chance to get a DVD
I have been following you for 5 years now and this is a wonderful thing you are doing for your customers and new people to gardening as well I have learned a lot from you and the mistakes I have made myself but I did learn from the mistakes. One more thing to learn is a good thing and knowing how to graft would be excellent. Thanks Mike for all your hard work.
This sounds like it would be interesting as well as enjoyable. I was disabled approx.22 years ago and my husband passed away a little over 13 years ago. I’m not the fastest at doing things but I hang in there. My lawn and working out in it and starting and trading plants with friends and neighbors has been the only thing that has prevented me from being a couch potato. I hire someone to mow my lawn and save my energy for planting, transplanting my indoor and out door plants. It would be nice to really feel usefull again. Thank you for all your tips plans and ideas thru the years. By the way my lawn is a little over six acres. I also have a couple of lawn guys that would be glad to pitch in and give me a hand if I needed it.
These are beautiful trees. My hat is definately in the ring!!
Sure do enjoy all this Info. This has been very helpful. Would love to have the DVD.

It’s going to take one HUGE hat to throw everyone’s name in it, but please include mine and I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks!
Love the shape of the Japanese Maples. The ones I like the best are the ones which have the delicate, lacey leaf, and get almost a burgandy red leaf.
I have one in the ground, and three to plant this spring. I would LOVE to be able to properly propagate them! Thank you SO much for all your wonderful advice!

Mike, Thanks for all your post and advice
I would love to win the DVD.
Mike, I would really like to be one or the winners, but I know the only way to really win is through hard work. I moved next to a man and his property over 12 years ago, he used to run a big nursery business back in the day. He had 4 greenhouses and overgrown Christmas trees. I didn’t learn of all of his knowledge until after his death. I really wish I would have gotten to know him and I know I could have learned a lot from him. He seemed to be just a bitter mean old man, so I didn’t want any parts of that. After his death his property was sold to someone wanting to build condo’s there and wanted to be rid of the greenhouses. I worked out a deal to tear down as much of the greenhouses that I could before they did. I since rebuilt one on my property and am still completing it. I am still learning everything and need all the help I can get. I’ve learned a lot already about propagating plants from you and am eager to get at it again this spring. This informational DVD would be a big help to further my knowledge and to help me one day start my own business in this field. Thanks for all you do for us!
I don’t know anything about those symbols below but, I would love to have the DVD. Thanx for all you do

Mike,
I’ve been a subscriber to your newsletter for a long time and have learned SOOOO much over the years. Japanese Maples are my favorite tree. But living in Tennessee they’re very expensive. Living on a fixed income makes it very hard for me to justify the cost of buying one. I was given one for my birthday (October) a few years ago, but it died in less than a year. Guess I didn’t have enough knowledge about them to grow one successfully. I’d love the DVD so that hopefully I’d be able to grow these beautiful trees.
Keep up the great work Mike. Your newesletter is a big bright spot to my day!
Please enter me into the drawing. These trees are amazing!!
Someone backed their car over my friends Japanese maple and I’d love to learn how to start a replacement for him.

Wow, there are a lot of people who have responded. It just proves how great of a teacher you are.
I have been growing volunteers from red maples in my yard (I have about a dozen, mostly 1 yr old plants). I would like to take some cuttings from the 40+ Japanese Maples that I have in my yard and do some grafting. I have read some on the subject and have a basic grasp of the operaation but would love to have nore information on grafting. Among my favorites is the Shishigashira (Lionshead), Inaba Shidare, Crimson Princess and the Crimson Queen. Actually I have so many that I would like to graft (Orangeola, Baldsmith, Katsura (my wife’s favorite), Red Dragon, Omurayama).
If you would like some pictures, I would be glad to send them to you.

Mike, the maples are so beautiful. My sister has a red, lace leaf japanese maple and as much as I like watching the birds I set there and watch the leaves dance in the breeze. I have never even heard of the one you keep showing, so many different ones. I thought there was either red lacy or red broad leaf. Guess I spent too much time looking at the Elm trees. Thanks for all you teach us.
WONDERFUL TREES AND A WELCOME OPPORTUNITY. HOPING TO BE ONE OF THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE CHOSEN.
THANKS

Now that the ground is starting to thaw, and have a clean canvas in a new location, what best to add to the beauty! No trees yet, but THIS one to grow & multiply would be heavenly as well as a side money maker! My fingers are crossed! Yes, yes, yes! Your gift of knowledge is wanted & needed! Thank you so much! Mike,
I would love to have one of the DVD’s. Always wanted to try grafting!!!
Gary
Love the newsletteers and all of your valuable info. Condsider both feet in the hat. Though on a side note I have 2 Japanese maples, one growing in the ground and one in a planter with “bonsai type soil” and you wouldn’t believe the difference. The pot grown tree has doubled in size, wheras the ground grown one has grown only a foot or so. I was always told that container grown trees grow slower?
I’m a big fan. I hope I get one.
Hi Mike!
I have been a fan for about 3 years now. I have a 50 + year old Japanese Maple tree that tops out at about 20 feet it is vigorous and absolutely gorgeous 3 and a half seasoms out of the year. But even in the dead of winter like now, I find the trunk and shape to be bonsai like a very pretty. I would love to know how to graft my own specamins…..I have planted the seeds of this tree in a backyard nursery and they have all taken off and are growing. But it turns out my heavy soil is slowing their growth…..read it in your e book….anyway…….I am a real fan of your love for this maple and for your approach to gardening……thank you for all the posts and free gardening tips. M. Barbara Taylor in Brunswick, Virginia.

I was wondering if you would like some seeds from either or both of these beauties. Also i am looking to trim mine to allow more light and sun into the area and to show off its beauty, do you have any info on this?
I grew 6 Crimson queen laceleaf Japanese maples from seed 6 years ago. Only two remain and I have been looking at grafting them. It will be fantastic to have a DVD that can guide me to a successful graft.

Have learned so much from your books and video’s. Thank you! Trying to grow Japanese maples under, or near oak trees, so far only two have survived. Is this even possible? I know oak roots are toxic to some plants. Have just about given up gardening due to this problem. I am in Northern CA zone 9 – 14 acres of Oak trees! Anyone out there with any ideas? Would appreciate hearing from you. Hat’s in the ring!

Here in OK we don’t typically get much prolonged cold winter weather. Will a few over night freezing temps provide enough “dormancy”?
Yes! This is great
I read, save and look forward to all of your emails. I keep saying one of these days I’ll be able to do this.
Hi Mike. I’m a Japanese Maple addict over in the UK, and your info is always helpful and inspirational to me. I’ve been growing Acers for about 30 years in total, but as a complete addict for about the last 5 years. I now have hundreds of seedlings, grown from seeds collected (with permission) from various parks and gardens around Britain. I give some of my small plants to the gardens for them to sell, as a “Thank You” for being allowed to collect. I’m hoping to try grafting for the first time this year, so your DVD would be a big help to me. If you select my “hat”, I’d be happy to help with the shipping cost. Bring on Spring! Rob
Mike, would love to win the DVD. Enjoy your updates!

I’d love to put my hat into the ring. My dad loved gardening, but he didn’t get to do as much as he would of liked. He was a firefighter with the Dallas Fire Department for over 40 years and worked a part-time job in between to raise 5 kids. We lost him on March 31, 2008 because of a doctors error in judgement and other doctors/nurses mistakes. We are learning, but we are trying to create a lovely garden in his memory. Thank you so much for your tips and suggestions, it really helps.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the opportunity to win your grafting DVD. I tried it once and it didn’t work. I’d really like to try again, the right way.
Could those rooting balls that you showed us last year be used in the grafting process?
On questionaire cards, companies always want to know what your hobby is. For years I didn’t think I had one, I just worked around the house and yard. Finally one day it hit me, I’m a gardner, a backyard one at that!
Thanks for all your help Mike!
Patricia Marks

Mike,
I’m a dahlia grower for the past two years. Never a gardener before, but got involved by taking an old (and now deceased friend) to his “garden club” when he had no way to get there. One of my club members told me about you and I’ve since told ten’s of people of your great plan and wonderful service you provide your customers, members and people who receive your email.
A good example of your generosity is how you’ve linked to Amber’s blog. This is just one of many resources you’ve so generously shared with your friends and members.
Well, I’ve got to go now to make up some Dirt Farmer’s Fudge.
Fred
Hat is in! Thanks for the opportunity.
I have hunted for years to find trees with desired seeds, but–the only ones that I have seen, would take a trespasser (on private, fenced, land) to be able to get some seeds. Does anyone sell the seeds? These lovely little trees are great in most any landscape. Thanks for keeping us inspired, Mike.
I live in an agricultural area of southeast Washington state (Pasco). All of the fruit trees that are grown here are not grown on their parent root stock but some other variety of tree. I have always wondered what it would be like , if possible, to have pink ladys, scarlet, fuji, and golden delicious apples growing on one tree.
Would love to learn how!!!
Love your newsletters! Would love the DVD!

Throwing in my hat for a chance to win one of these free DVDs!
Mike, thanks for the newsletter and great information. Gardening is a passion and I enjoy growing the unique and unusual. Propagating Japanese Maples … ??? … How exciting! I have my degree in Forestry (MSU), and I perceived Japanese Maples were all grafts, but I just thought any seed produced, as with any grafted hybrid, would revert back to a root-stock variety/species … and more-or-less useless. I NEVER thought about using the root-stock seedlings as the actual root-stock to be used for the graft. I’m interested and MY HAT’S IN!!!
I would love to get that free DVD!!! Thanks for all your helpful tips
Pick me, pick me! 😉 I’d love to have one of the DVD’s. Thanks for the great info you provide to everyone.

Good Morning, Mike!!
When my mother and I make a trip to Alabama to see my Aunt and Uncle, upon entering their street I would be spellbound by the beauty of this tree that was sitting up on a neighbor’s hill and have wondered what kind of tree that could be because it is not indigenous to the area. Well, now I know it is one of those Japanese maples you talk about all the time. It is one of those crimson queens you show. The feathery quality is rather amazing among all our oaks and pines down here. Thanks again for all your hard work! A grateful student.

Mike, Your site and newsletter are absolutely the best and are so helpful. I just came in from outside to reread some of your archived newsletters to prepare for spring. Hope you have a great day and I really do appreciate all the info you share with us. I’m someone with a black thumb but with your tips I manage to grow beautiful flowers and shrubs. Thanks.

Would you say grafting Japanese maple trees is like grafting fruit trees?
I am wondering why these trees need to be grafted if they can easily be grown from seed? Just curious about the process. I know fruit trees are grafted into root stock as well and that is how different varieties have been grown. I am new to all of this but am very interested in one day establishing a business growing trees. This is a particularly popular one. They are beautiful because the Lord made them!
Kathleen,
Japanese maples can be easily grown from seed, even Japanese Red Maples can be grown from seed. But just like with the fruit trees the only way to reproduce an exact clone of the variety that you want is to use a process that is asexual. Growing from seed is sexual propagation and just like with making babies, each and every one is very unique. Because most rare varieties of Japanese maples are difficult to grow from a rooted cutting, grafting is the most predictable and dependable way to produce the plant that you want to grow.
Hi Kathleen. It’s best practice to graft a particular ‘named’ maple cultivar, to be 100% sure of getting the desired characteristics. I grow maples from seed, and I have some really beautiful seedlings, but some are very different to the parent tree. This is because maples hybridize (cross-pollinate) freely. This is the means by which new cultivars are produced. Truly it can be said that these trees bring praise to the Creator of such beauty (Psalm 104:24). Rob
