Help Wanted, Perry, OH 44081, Part Time (20-30 Hours/wk.)
Work in our casual office in Eastern Lake County, Ohio (Perry)
We’d like you to work a minimum of 20 hours a week up to 30 hours a week. There are only two of us that you’ll report to and we’re both pretty laid back and easy to work with. For the most part we’ll stay out of your way and let you do what you need to do. This should be a fun and interesting job.
I might as well say this right up front. We need somebody that will come to work ready to work. If you are addicted to your smart phone, Facebook, twitter, texting or other time wasting adventures please don’t apply.
If you need to briefly communicate with your kids I’m fine with that. I get that. Kids are important. But if you have friends, cousins or others who expect you to communicate with them all day long, that’s not going to work. I guess I’m looking for somebody with some good old fashioned work ethics.
This position will require you to be on your feet a lot of the time. Some of the individual tasks you’ll be performing on a daily basis include:
- Packing up orders so they’re ready to be shipped (nothing weighs more than 30 lbs.)
- Putting pre-printed labels on daily orders we receive and stage them for shipment
- Sweeping up the small warehouse and keeping it organized
- Counting out lightweight nursery pots to be packaged up for shipment
- Computer work including label creation, order management using our online shopping cart, spreadsheet work that includes importing/exporting and organizing the data
- There are times you’ll also be required to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher
This is important. You must have good computer skills. If you’re good with a computer (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) you should be able to learn our system fairly quickly.
The truth is, this is a “jeans and t-shirt” kinda job. You’ll be in and out of the office throughout the day. Your main job is to get orders out the door.
Still with me? Good. Now I am going to really become difficult.
I am not going to make you drive 10 miles to fill out an application, then make you get all dressed up to come in for an interview and fill out more papers then get grilled by two or three managers. Then have to come back for a second or third interview for more grilling.
I won’t do that.
So instead of all of that, I going to ask you to do a series of simple projects. Believe it or not I’ve used this process in the past and it works well. If you do well on these little projects you will be considered for the job.
With that said, here’s how you apply. I am going to ask you to do a few research and written exercises and you have to send me your work via email.
Okay here we go. This is your homework. Research and answer each of the following questions:
1. Who is John Carlton and why should I care?
2. What is HARO and could it benefit me? If not, why? If so, how?
3. What’s a Youtube channel? What’s the URL of mine?
4. What’s a blog? What’s WordPress?
5. What’s a clamshell propagator and where can I buy one?
6. What about you? On a personal level tell me as much about you as you want me to know. Include your name address and contact information. Send personal and business references? Can I do a background check on you? Are you employed? Laid off? What computer programs do you know best, how much have you used computers and what have you used them for?
Yeah, yeah I know. This is pretty bizarre isn’t it? But it does work with great results and applicants don’t have to waste a lot of time applying in person or going through interviews.
Email your homework to my son, Duston McGroarty at [email protected].
Please don’t call me on the phone or knock on my door, I’ll need a little time to go through the responses that I get. You’re welcome to follow up via email.
What about me?

A lot of people like me, some people don’t. It comes with the territory. I maintain a mailing list of over 180,000 people and the names on that list change daily, so that means that over the years there probably has been over a million people on that list. Most of them like me. There are a few I’m sure that don’t.
But I still try.
Okay, I hope to hear from you.
