Thank you Mike and gang, but I have to tell you that I’m the one who needs to be thanking you guys. You see, without going into a lot of detail, I was burned out mentally, emotionally and physically with the job I had. I was in a tunnel and could not see the light at the end of it. I happened upon a recording by a guy named Earl Nightingale, the name of the recording is called “Acres of Diamonds”. Soon after I happened upon your Free Plants dot com web site and said to myself “I can do this” and I have been for the last few years. I “officially” (got all legal) and opened last May and it’s been a hoot for me and Amy. I’m not in that tunnel any longer. So Thank you! And Happy Holidays!

Dick & Claire share their experience starting a retirement hobby gone crazy. 11/27/2013

Around 6 years ago My wife Claire & I joined your program. Combining your lessons with a little of our own expertise we managed to build our business. Sales increased at the rate of about 25% per year. This year our nursery volume topped $ 50K in sales. I think it;s about time we let you know how our business has exploded here in Maine and it would not have happened without your guidance! We thank you Mike for your support.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and thank you for doing what you do best.

Hi Mike and Pam, plus all of your Family.
A quick thank you from down under, Australia.

Thank you for the greetings of good wishes for the American Thanksgiving
Celebration, I wish my Wife Jenny and I could be there on the great day.
I am an avid fan and reader of all of your blogs. And cannot get enough of your instruction videos.
I am about 3 months into my ‘Backyard Nursery Business’ and have 2 minor annoyances…
Number 1…is not too hard, Converting your Spring Time Months in Ohio… into our Spring Time months in the Southern Hemisphere…
Number 2 is learning the names of the plants, (Very Basic, I know) but a lot harder for an oldie!
    But I will master it.
    Love the donkeys.
Good Luck Guys. regards, Mike Whittingham

      Mike,

I can assure you the plant names will come to in time and once they do you’ll never be able to forget them even if you wanted to. I can remember my first day pulling orders at a wholesale nursery when I was 17. I thought to myself; “I will never remember these plant names.” Obviously I did!

I apologize for not making the seasons a little more clear for you folks in Australia. The first time somebody reminded me of that I said to him when I started writing this stuff I wasn’t even sure if people down the road were going to read it let alone the other side of the world. Good luck! You’ll do fine.

I sure enjoy your web sight, and I have a question about knock out roses. I have 5 that were about 2 feet tall when I planted them. Last fall I cut them back to about the 2 foot again. This spring they grew like crazy, were really beautiful and went to 5 to 6 feet tall. I am going to cut them back again, but wonder just how much I should cut off. They are so easy to care for that I want to see if I can start more plants from them. Any suggestion?

      James,

Two suggestions. I’d cut them back pretty hard, but not quite as far back as you cut them last year. And about propagating them. They are patented and it’s against the law to propagate them. If you look at the tag you’ll see the patent information.

Thank you for those 15 years of blogging. You’re a pioneer, Mike, and you and your wife and family and team of people have really given us great advice. When I first began to read your emails and columns, I had just begun to really pay attention to how I wanted our yard to look. So you’ve been there all along.

I have tried to reach you via the internet, but I have a fragnanced snowball tree as I saw in one of your videos but someone has backed over it and it split at the root. I am trying to save it. It is several years old and was probably6 feet tall. is there a way i can propagate the limbs and get them to grow. I took some limbs off and put in a plastic container as you have shown about tree/shrubs. This incident happened appx 1 1/2 months ago. I have fed, proped the tree back up into the area where it split watered it and have NOT put any feeding into the root area. can this tree be saved. I need your HELP. Yvonne Moss

      Yvonne,

More than likely your plant can be saved. I’d trim it up some now when it’s dormant and just see what spring brings. Plants are pretty resilient, I’m sure it will do fine. Come June propagate it like this; http://www.freeplants.com/homemade-plant-propagation.htm
