Hello Mike and all you gardeners! I live in Florida and have wanted to start a backyard nursery for decades! Homeschooling 3 sons took precedence. I just couldn’t get it all together but now they are grown and I have an acre to play with. We have year-long growth opportunities but high temperatures in the summer play havoc with some plants so it’s a learning curve to figure out what will thrive. (I’m from Ohio by the way!) The last 2 and 1/2 years I have worked part time at a nursery where I learned how to propagate landscape plants and with Mike’s helpful videos I hope to continue learning and growing. And if I could be a full-time member of Backyard Growers I could offer many tropical and sub-tropical plants for sale.
Sharon Christian says
Thank You Mike for your generous web site and “You Tube” presentations. I’m a retiring Nurse, and past part owner of a Retail Nursery. I will be growing for Wholesale and Retail in the beautiful Kaimichi Mountains. Your Books and projected profit/loss numbers have bridged the gap in making a financial plan that I can work with and provide the little extra I would like for the next phase of my life. Looking forward to do something that I love which is growing beautiful plants.
Kitty says
I hope I’m not too late for the contest. I love all your how-to videos and wanting to learn more about generating extra income from my tiny backyard. Thank you again for sharing your years of knowledge with me.

Hi Mike,
As many of us here are looking to begin a new journey… I have always loved planting and caring for plants and hoped that one day I can begin my own business right at home. Your membership would be so greatly appreciated to begin my new venture on the right track from the start with fewer mistakes.
All the best to all!

Mike, I have enjoyed reading these e-letters you send out. I have dabbled in plants as a hobby and enjoy the shared knowledge. I hope to do more than dabble in the near future. I propagated several plants for my own use and was impressed with the number of people wanting to buy them when I had a yard sale recently. I was not ready to do that, yet, but hope to do so next year. I am in South Florida where the plant varieties and the seasons are different but the knowledge you share can be applied to most plants no matter where you are. I hope I win that membership the next time my wife and I visit Ohio.
Thanks!

Mike – I have been reading your backyardnursery information for a few years now – I am a mother /wife of 22 years. I have grown up around grandmas farm territory & my family had our own garden to work. At that time I did not like weeds & things, but, as I have grown older & now have my own family …. I enjoy having a garden. I am a closed head injured survivor(Jan 1988 – car accident) I currently suffer from having grand mal seizures. I truly enjoy my hands and feet in the ground as much as I possibly can……for I find what I’ll call “playin'” in the ground very relaxing & I love to see our God helping me to grow his plants /for him—–but he is also helping me. I am unable to work outside the home & I would like to be able to help my husband in supporting the family financially. I do not drive & I would like to begin a small plant business from my home. We live in a small country town – where everyone knows everyone too ! I’m sure the word would have no problem getting around that I have healthy plants available. I would love to have the opportunity to win a free membership to your world of knowledge Mike. Please put my name in for the chance. Thank you
Garett Laugavitz says

Hi Mike, I’d like to be considered for the free membership. I’m grateful for everything I’ve already learned from your emails, articles, books, and videos. We’ve started our nursery, bumbling around as best we can. We’re already getting a bunch of “you’re crazy” comments (sometimes they’re more like, “that’s so cool, but you’re crazy”). At this point, we’re too old to care about those comments, but we’d sure love the opportunity to network and learn from others!

Hi All:
We live in central North Carolina, zone 7b. Our development is built on what use to be an old horse farm. Original house is still there at the end on the edge of the subdivision. With lots of deer and bunnies that are always hungry. Hosta’s seem to be dessert for the deer and the bunnies love our lilies and all things that flower. Looking for ideas where we can have nice yard with plants that deer and bunnies.
I grew up with honey suckle and wisteria that was over a cover my grandmothers arbor. Going to try and plant these too hope to find some that will not go wild.
Will try later this summer some of the tricks that hear and read from Mike. Will save me a lot of money and more importantly able to give to all my friends and members of our community garden club.

Mike, l really appreciate your informative posts & videos! I’ve been growing plant cuttings for years, but with only limited success, never getting more than 50% to actually root. I plan to start using your system soon and perhaps I’ll have more luck. Also, whatever I do manage to grow & not use myself, I give to friends & family. It would be wonderful to create an income for myself. I’m on social security but live with my 91 year old mother, as her caregiver. When she’s gone I will NEED the extra income. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise & knowledge. Would love to win that membership!

Your site has a lot of great tips. Going to use an old wooden umbrella for pole beans. I also use the four corners frame from a tent as tomato support. My husband hates when he throwing something away and sees me coming to see if I can repurpose it.
Trying to save our pool deck haven’t told my husband this idea yet but I would like to put a roof on it and screen it in and use it as an outdoor room.. Husband wants to clear everything out and plant grass. Sun is moving over the garden onto find a shady spot to work in.

I recently came across Mike’s website. I am a 41 year old female. These past two years I worked two jobs, finished my bachelors degree while still raising my daughter. I am a single mother, because I choose to adopt. I currently still work two jobs, but would love to work some from home to spend more time with my daughter. She and I enjoy planting flowers together, and if I was able to make money while spending time with my daughter, that would be a double blessing. I am very green when it comes to planting, but am willing to learn and gain knowledge of gardening. Thank you for the opportunity to possibly win the free lifetime membership.

Hey Mike, Thank you for allowing one of us the opportunity to get to know and work with you and you group more closely for free, I hope it’s me. I have been following your emails for a few years now and they have taught me several do’s and don’ts about many varieties of plants and how to cultivate them properly. I live in zone 9, the dry heat state. Eventually I need to get a garden set up and going but things get a little tight, quite often, since we are taking care of some of our grandchildren and that can eat up much of our time, as I’m sure most of you know. Again, Thank you for all the great and helpful advice in the past and I look forward to your future advice, and warnings!

I’m inspired to try some cuttings from my trees, and I’m going to put some in the ground this year. I hope you keep this going for a long time and keep us informed about all the issues we face in our gardens and our businesses !

in a week or so, my daughter, who I have not seen in 8 years and my two youngest grandsons who I have yet to meet will be moving close to my zone 7B location, I hope to work with them to develop a small plant business that will allow my daughter the opportunity to forego working for someone else away from the home and be there to raise her children in person as she raises small plants to supply to landscapers and other interested parties.

My husband and I have recently moved from our beloved farm to a new state to be near grand babies. I am feeling adrift without our large 3 acre flower garden on the farm, our animals and without new friends and needing something new to focus on. Would love to win this. I am a 56 year old self-employed shopkeeper in the UK and have owned and operated my own small shops for over 30 years. Unfortunately, since the death of my father, my mothers dementia has escalated to the point I have had to all but give up ‘work’ as I previously knew it in order to be her almost permanent companion.
I haven’t told you this because I want your sympathy vote, in fact this is the last thing I need as sympathy has never actually helped anybody. I love the idea of being able to a) grow plants for profit and b) help others to do the same who are in a similar boat. I believe there are many dementia suffers who would actually benefit by having more structure in their lives whilst being stuck in their homes and with the help of their carers could actually cover the cost of this care. (UK government pays just over £60 a week to a family member who puts there life on hold for an determined period of time.)
I could just set this up for the UK, but I would have to learn what people need to know via the University of Hard Knocks, which being a lifetime student could be done, but I think a membership to your site would cut the learning time by a massive margin.
Incidentally, regardless of your decision, I will still go ahead with a UK membership site (It’s not as if I’m doing anything for most of the day other than being here.) and when funds permit will join you on the inside.

Really enjoy all the different articles and videos you have shared with your readers, Mike.

Thanks for the chance to win a membership.
My husband & I are chicken farmers on my parents farm. We just received the news three weeks ago that my parents are putting the farm up for sale. Because farming the land is our only means of income, we are negotiating to purchase 5 acres of the land to continue to work and make an income. Well, that is not enough land to continue raising pastured chickens in a volume we need for a living. So we have been investigating other means to generating an income on only 5 acres instead of 65, We discovered the business of commercial rooted cuttings and have decided that is our next venture. We are also in our 50s and need something we can physically do for the next 15 to 20 years. Well, as I researched and looked for a solid mentor to help us reach our goal, I found you. My husband & I hope to become one of your new members in June. We are going into this blind but know we will be successful with the right instruction. To win a new membership would be the icing on the cake because that will free up our working capital to buy more cuttings and build our infrastructure.
We have only begone to sift through your info. I need to systematically plot our game plan on a calendar for the next three years and I hope to use your wealth of info to accomplish this. Next week I am calling a few of the commercial growers in our area to help me understand how to best meet their rooted cuttings needs. This includes determining which are the high demand plants and which generate the highest price per cutting. We need to start rooting as soon as possible. And this info will help us to narrow down what we should root first.
Thank you for your generosity, passion and desire to teach others.

Hi Mike
I have watch all the videos I can, of you, and your lovable family, I love growing anything, from fruit trees, veggies, and flowers. Ix myself bought a place out in the country with almost 6 acres, to follow my dreams. I just retired, and so I am able to do a lot now, working outside, I will soon be trying propagating my Rose of Sharon, Crabe Mytle, and the seeds I have saved from my Magnolia trees, which I have planted all of them.
I would love to be able to have a small business, that I don’t have work for someone else, which would be my dream, and also be able to make some extra income, Another great reason, would mean I could finally meet and greet you and your family,
.Thank you for the opportunity to be able to obtain those last goals of my new journey later life.

When we bought our house it was because my husband wanted big back yard. Right after we moved in, my husband’s health went downhill. Nothing has ever been done back there. He died four year’s ago and I’m finally coming out of the fog I have been in since then. I have been following you now for a couple of years and have decided that it is time I get off my butt and do something to increase my income. I just can’t make it on my Social Security any longer. I have downloaded the book and saved your emails. Starting slowly due to finances but things will improve. Thank you for all of your help with getting people like me up and going.

I have been following you Mike for several years. As a young child, I spent the summers at my grandparent’s farm in Pennsylvania. Those were the best years of my life. Life was different…folks helped one another with a kind and generous spirit. My grandmother planted the most beautiful flower gardens. After retirement, my mother became a self taught master gardener …she could grow anything…and couldn’t wait to get out in the garden to root, dig and grow plants. Now that I am approaching retirement, I want to follow in her footsteps by learning something she truly loved. Thank you Mike for teaching us how “to grow” a worthwhile hobby and a lucrative business. You are sharing the American dream with all of your followers.

It is never too late to start a business. Presently I am working on my masters in horticulture therapy and am doing my practicum working with special needs high school kids. It is at a commercial greenhouse that gives vocational training for them so that they can build their self-esteem and confidence and provide a way to make money for their futures. I love your ideas and experiences which have given me ideas as to find other ways to help further my horticulture therapy practices with special needs people as well as others such as the elderly that will provide a meaningful purpose for them. What I really like is that one does not need a greenhouse to be able to propagate and grow plants as I know how expensive it can be to run a greenhouse that money can be hard to find for. I look forward to using your ideas once I am finished with my practicum and have become a certified horticulture therapist hopefully next year. I am so glad that I came upon your site! Thank you, Mike!

I have tried for many moons to propagate different trees and plants to no avail, but since I move to L.A., Calif. I have tried and succeeded in propagating Cactus Cuttings from a Huge plant in the front yard. I just started cutting Single Stands of the Cactus to keep it from lifting the edge of the Roof and Rain Trough. Cut these large cuttings down to short pieces from the top end of the Cactus and planting them in the Back Yard Garden Area, So far out of 21 Cuttings I have given Two Away to Couples whom Fell in love with them, and told and helped them plant them with the proper soil mixture Cactus Plants require… Just as basically You have told US to do.
But I have failed in Propagating any other Trees or Plants because I keep doing something wrong. I have tried Orange, Lemon, Apple, Tomato, and several others to NO Avail… Thanks for all the directions you have posted and that I have done “something wrong” in trying to follow your Instructions.
I would like to enter to win a free membership! As I am retired and 75 and the House Husband, that would to learn more Garden Knowledge for the Hot area we life in, The Southern Part of California.
Thanks Again for the knowledge I have received from you and have been able to Remember it.

Since I have found your website I have shared it with everyone I know. You shamelessly give such wonderful advice on how to not only make gardening easy, but fun. We have put in our first raised bed this year and have more supplies in the truck for another! You have taught me how to prune fruit trees, how to root cuttings and how to mix soil. I am grateful for all that you share. Thank you for sharing your passion of growing, with us.

Hello Mike, ,
I have been enjoying reading you tips for over a year now. I have allot of whisteria purple and white all over.Bamboo. Is this something you think I could sell pretty easily? I need to thin out? Lol
Norman Linden says
I wanted to start a plant business when I retired, but I thought that we might move, so have been putting off doing anything. I can’t wait any longer, as I am not getting any younger!. I have started dividing hostas, and collecting and potting other plants to start at least in a small way. Mike, I enjoy all of your articles, and look forward to more of them.
Darian Ward says
Mike and his site are awesome. Nowhere else will you find information that will change your life for free other than freeplants.com. I purchased some of the literature that Mike offers and the information is tremendously helpful. I started some plants last year in the aquarium propagator, which worked well, but this year I will be upgrading to the large propagation box that Mike uses.

would really love to get started doing this, especially since it seems like i am going to be stuck in this house in town instead of being able to move to a small piece of land…i’ve always loved growing plants, especially from seeds.
Victoria Richards says
Thank you for your amazing gift to us all. I found you a few weeks ago and purchased everything you had to offer. As soon as my townhouse closes I am moving to ten acres in Austin, that I plan to make a tree farm, nursery and conference/event center with lavish gardens.
I have spent my life developing life-restorative natural health technologies for chronic pain, arthritis, strokes, and chronic conditions not helped with traditional medicine. I train physicians and practitioners to use many natural compounds and formulas along with advanced technologies and have ordered 1/3 of a ton of pure rain-forest herbs for compounding, but the funny thing is, I never thought about growing my own plants.
You inspired me so much that I researched tractors and ordered a Kubota like yours. Being very type ‘A’, I could not wait to begin propagation. I purchased a few dozen plastic stack-able deep drawers and have put up several thousand cuttings with 500-1500 per day in the plan until I move.
These stacks of white plastic bags in drawers in my garage and on my otherwise pretty and tidy patio have created quite a few interesting conversations with potential buyers. Many have been very intrigued and I feel certain they have gone directly to your website to learn more.
I look forward to becoming a member and integral part of the growing and selling community. My five year old grandson Dallas has been involved with making compost and growing an immense garden at school and he is excited to spend the summer with his GiGi growing “lots of beautiful plants and trees”. Thank you all so much. Big hugs from Texas, Victoria
Karen says
Love your website, Mike! I hope to win, too!
Rosa Darlene Northcutt says
Hello Mike
You have inspired me more than you know. I have lived all my life not caring for yard work but when I retired I found myself with a lot of time on my hands and there is only so much quilting you can do, lol.
My mother got sick and came to live with me and she decided to sell her house so I dug up her irises since I did not want them to get sold along with the house. This is when I started messing with plants. I am very computer literate so I started researching the internet and that is when I found you and your website. I then started experimenting and found that I like to experiment, Imagine that, I spend my whole working career in an office and I find out something new about myself, I like to experiment with plants. I have been experimenting ever since. Love getting your updates all the time. Imagine that I never like to work in the yard and now that is all I do!

My interest in plant propagation is not for commercial purposes but mainly to provide plants for landscape work I am doing at my church. We have environmental bio swales and a creek restoration that require native plants. There is no budget to purchase plants so I have been referring to Mike’s website for ideas and techniques for “free” plants through propagation. I’ll be planting red twig dogwood, snowberry and ninebark this fall that I started from hardwood cuttings 2 years ago. Thanks for all of the advise.

I would love the opportunity to start fresh and start something new. Thank you for the opportunity.

Recently learned about Mike when I researched Ja[anese Red Maples – I have a full grown one in my yard(a rental) and wanted to start some lil’ ones to put in our upcoming new house and yard. I knew NOTHING about plants, other than how to kill them quickly , Yet Mike’s writings have helped me to foster 4 from seed! Recently injured at work, I need to do something to supplement my income and occupy my time -and this is better and easier than the expense of my other hobbies, and it brings joy to my Wife – a WIN , WIN for me!!

Shirley Webber says
Hi Mike,
I am going to tell you a story, very true story. I don’t consider it to be a hard luck story but it is mine. I am 53 yrs old and 10 years ago I was diagnosed with lupus, my kidneys are only working at 15%, I have high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma and a lot more from this disease. About 4 years ago I took on my grand daughter, at the time she was almost 6. She has autism, ADHD,, a missing gene, she doesn’t feel pain the way we do and she doesn’t have tears. This is just to name a few. A year ago November I adopted her, she is such an amazing child. I also raise English Mastiffs.
Last year I decided that I needed more in my life than what I had. I am not able to get a “regular” job and I started looking online and ran across your blogs, you=tube videos and a lot more. At this time I have never grown anything, except a few veggies for the family. I have never considered myself as having a green thumb., but after seeing your videos about clipping and sticking, how to start my own back yard nursery, and buying plants wholesale. I took the leap and I am having the time of my life. I have gathered plants from the board, seedlings, stock plants, liners etc, and almost everything is growing, I AM AMAZED at all of the information you give us as well as all the members.. I love getting the emails and all the knowledge that you possess. I am truly grateful for everything you do for us and how much knowledge you have and share.

My Grandma told me to never pay for a plant….just pinch off a little and take it home and start it yourself…lol. My family on. It’s sides were farmers and I have that gene..it comes out as a need to plant things and watch them grow. Being in awe of nature. I hope I win:-)

At age 80, I’m a little less likely to begin a new plant business, but it’s still a possibility. First will be to divide what I have and see how a sale works out. Maybe I’ll rent a room to an avid plant person and away we’ll go. Anyway, I’d love to be on your team, Mike!

Hi Mike,
I have to say I would be so grateful and humbled to win a Private Backyard Growers Membership! I live on a farm in central Wisconsin and due to some serious health issues with my husband we are forced to sell our cows. I have been an avid gardener for years and have worked for a landscaping company and done a lot of landscaping on my own now for the past few years. With this change in our lives we were trying to decide what my husband and I can do now for our income and future and since he loves to work with the land and I love plants we decided on starting a nursery. Doing some research I came upon you and all the information that you have to offer! I immediately bought all your books and started reading as well as watching your videos and reading all of your emails. It is truly amazing all that I have learned in a couple short months. We are now in the process of starting our own Back “farm” garden and the chance to become a member would be an amazing opportunity. Oh and by the way I have to say I LOVE the way you explain things, so down to earth and easy to understand. And your bibs remind me of my Dad who is no longer with me. He always had a pair on!

Hi Mike,
I so appreciate all the information you send me. Here’s a story about my new blueberry plant that started out “bad” that has a happy ending. Late winter/early spring but before any leaves appeared, the local rabbits decided to have a feast on one of my newly planted blueberry plants. They left some twigs and thanks to you I knew exactly what to do with them. I have four new blueberry plants! Plus where the rabbits ate the plant, well, that just stimulated more growth. So I am happy.
My wish is that the one here who needs the free membership the most, wins it. That may or may not be me.
One more thing about my place here. I bought a ten acre farm last year. I planted most of it to hay for the goats. Turns out I have another two acre field behind the woods that the realtor didn’t tell me about. I don’t need another hay field so that is going to be my food forest. I had hundreds of tree seeds in my refrigerator in cold moist stratification, all winter and they are sprouting now. Chestnuts, hazels, Ginkgo, American plum, service berry, Sea Buckthorn. and on and on. I will definitely have extra trees available.
I hope everyone here has a great and prosperous summer. Take care, Marilyn

I just wanted to thank you for keeping me passionate about my love of all things plant, for all these years.
Every time someone would compliment me on my green thumb, I would think
” Thanks MIke ” I felt that I had to meet my garden family and it is a wonderful
place , experience and joy to meet others who are further along on the ” plant journey ”
I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying the membership .
Sheryl says
Hi Mike. I’m Sheryl from southeast Louisiana and I am a plant addict. I love to propagate plants and have even had people stop to ask if they can buy some of the roses I propagate. I’d love a free membership to your Backyard Growers group. Thanks for all the wonderful tips and tricks you share with us!
Susie says
I hope to do this one day.
Larry says
Thanks for all you do. A couple of years ago I got our book on how to make money selling plants for $4.97. I took our marketing class, great information. I am taking cuttings like mad right now. So being a member would be my next step into this adventure.
Suzanne says
hello Mike,
I have been a partial? member for several years now, at least I think that’s what I am. Anyway, I have told so many people about your website and I have learned so much from you that I feel like I am a real member of the family. Although I am not buying and selling, I am learning a lot! Sometimes I feel if I started selling it would be wonderful and then I could help someone else by growing something needed in my area of Massachusetts.
It would be a priviledge to win a REAL membership and someday travel to Ohio to one of your gatherings, thanks for the opportunity. Congrats to whoever wins and continue to stay connected to Mike’s support system.
Jim Morton says
WOW – great deal on the free permanent membership!
Joe Mathias says
You always have the most informative emails! I look forward to eventually moving to a location where I can set up my growing area, and start potting for sales. I hope I win!

I just spent the afternoon with you on the internet. Wow. Time flies when you are having a good time and learning such great techniques and ideas from you. Thank you so much for all of your great advice. I will be watching for more from you. If I should win the membership it would be fabulous, but I feel as though I have won something already just by stumbling upon your site and your videos.
Danielle Woodcock says
Desperately want to win the free membership. I want to make more money to make a better life for my 5 year old son.
Candy Forman says
Plant propagation is my passion! This sounds like the perfect resource for me!
Deanna Hood says
I would very much like to win this membership. I am presently a college student preparing for graduation. Gardening would bring me great personal peace and joy, but it would also help supplement the household income (which consists of my husband’s disability benefits until I can find gainful employment).
Thank you for all the free information you provide as it is of great value to beginners such as myself.
Jenelle Roxie Marshall says
Greetings! I’m Jenelle, in Port Saint Lucie, Fla. I’m a lifetime treehugger/greenthumber, and spend as much time in my garden as possible. I grow my own herbs and vegetables, and already have some small fruit trees and shrubs. I was lucky enough to purchase a home with a myriad of exotic plants in the landscaping, many of which propagate on their own. I am hoping to find a way to make my passion my income,( along with my editing business 🙂 ) and be able to spend more time at home with my daughter and grandson. Currently I cook for others to pay my bills, and I wish I didn’t! This opportunity is not something I can afford, so I do hope the universe sees fit for me to be the one you choose! Blessed be!
Debby W. says
I found your website many years ago and referred to it often for my home landscaping. We are now in the 7th growing season of a non-profit business my husband and a friend started – growing fresh produce and giving it away to those in need in our area. And now that my boss is talking retirement in 2 years or so, I will need another job. Maybe it’s time to get deeper into growing – both for myself and Impact Harvest (our non-profit). This membership will get me started now so I can work for myself in 2 years. Thank you, Mike, for all your hard work and the knowledge you share.
Tom Caig says
Been sticking soft cuttings in my new misting bed…wow….you said it is like magic,, were you ever right ! Can’t believe how good they look ! Love your newsletters and your business model. I’d love to know if I can do this from Italy! I already have adopted some of your methods of propagation with huge success! I know I have more to learn. I’d love to get a free membership. Here’s hoping!
Robin Earnest says
Wow wee there are a lot of people vying to join through a free membership on here. As for me all I can state is I love to grow any and everything, from veggies to trees, flowering and succulent plants for inside and out along with all types of Herbs for cooking. This year I chose not to grow a veggie garden as I wanted to concentrate on Catalpa trees. We have 4 very old Catalpa trees at a little place we own at Jackson lake here in Georgia. I obtained seed from the dried pods before they opened, then placed them in the freezer. I have thus far planted 2 more trees 2 years ago at this lake house. This year I soaked the seed over night and the ones that floated to the top I threw away and those that sank I planted. I am very pleased to say I have 32 little Catalpa trees about 1 1/2 inches tall which came up only after a week. I was thrilled. I have house plants that I have had for over 20 years, which I root and grow more of, they include Christmas Cactus, Jade plant, African violets and the Triostar Stromanthe ( Stromanthe Sanguinea) house plant which is one of my oldest, this plant looks beautiful all the time as if it has painted leaves. I even painted it in oils on canvas along with the Jade plant and etc. I will not go on and on any longer. I simply hope I can join in as I really can not afford the fee at this time but I dearly I love all that Mr. McGroarty does to help everyone to learn about planting and becoming successful at it. I want to start growing and propagating cuttings Not only to sell all types of trees and plants but also to help other people to learn from my experiences along the way.. Thank you for this opportunity to gain a membership free of charge.

I have always appreciated Mike for many years. He speaks from the heart and he isn’t trying to impress anyone with fancy writings and making a big deal out of everything. He just tells it like it is, and he never offends anyone ———–not knowingly, any way——-but he has criticized, rather unjustly, and he always came back with a great attitude.
Who can get mad at a guy that loves donkeys.
That’s my kind of guy.
Joe says
Sorry. The last sentence of the first paragraph should have read: I have always appreciated Mike for many years. Hey Mike,
Looks like everybody is trying to get in on this free membership. I use to read your articles when I lived in Edenton, NC before the Tornado hit us on April 25, 2014. We had to move to another county to start over. Well, God made sure that I had enough room to have a garden because I now have about 3 acres to play with. I’m trying to start a nursery here selling small plants like you did, but it is kind of hard working from a wheel-chair. You see I am a right-leg, above-the-knee amputee and I have to use crutches or a wheel-chair to get around with. But, that’s okay because Jesus is showing me what He wants me to do. It sure would be nice to win that free membership, but if I don’t I will still read your notes and learn that way. God bless you Mike and your family. Keep doing what God has told you to do. Some day I might be just like you doing this as a business. Have fun and remember that Jesus Christ loves you very, very much and I do too.
Charles Golden says
Winning the free membership would take me a long way towards 1) passing my love for plants on to my children and 2) helping me make a living off of my true love for plants.

Love this site and have purchased Mike’s book. Going to get in on the trial offer when membership opens again. I am teaching my grandsons, Dave age 7, and Jaeden age 5, the importance of growing plants for food. We started this year with a small container garden of vegetables and some flowers. I would love to teach them a business like selling plants they have cut and rooted. I am responsible for them now. I adopted them after my son came home from the Iraq War. He had PTSD and took his own life after being put in jail for sleeping in an abandoned building in Philadelphia. I know a free membership would help them and me learn a skill they could use for the rest of their lives. Thanks Mike for all you do.Who knows maybe someday me and the boys will come say hello to you and the donkeys in Ohio!
Ralph L Mort says
Hi Mike
Just started trying to root a few plants. got fired up reading your material.

I have been sticking cuttings in the late fall in PA for two years now. I take ten cuttings from each of the heritage fruit tress on my property, a 150 year old farm. In the following spring my cuttings sprout leaves and they stay green all summer. In the fall I pull them out with the intent to pot them and there are no roots, nothing. What’s happening?
Dave Hine says
I look forward to your “newsletter” every week and can’t believe the amount of info that can be gleaned. Gotta love those donkeys too!!!

A PERMENANT membership would be greatly appreciated.

I have enjoyed reading your articles and watching your videos of your vast gardening knowledge. For years I have been afraid to do anything with plants because I was sure I’d kill them our ruin their appearance. When we moved a year ago, I needed to plant the yard. Now I have plants that are looking wonderful. This year I plan to begin trying my hand at propagating. My daughter will be working with me. Since she is unable to keep a job for health reasons, this will give her an opportunity for future income. This membership will be great timing and encouraging. Thank you for the opportunity to learn.

I have been following Mike and Justin for a couple years now, watched many videos and subscribed. I have stuck plants in the wrong sand for two years of seasons, both soft wood cuttings and also hardwood cuttings. I plant a garden on two properties here in Columbus, Ohio and start any plants from seeds and liners. I utilize the vegetables and flowers with my family and friends. Have always thought about going part time or helping, since cancer and radiology it’s been rough. I am a little better able to get started with selling now but the funds are not where they need to be to get started. I always look forward to Mike’s emails. Thx, Otis

Mike,
I read all of your e-mails and this is a great idea, giving away a free permanent membership. I live in McKean County up here in North Central PA and sometimes we have some strange weather conditions. Last year for instance, we had a freeze of 21 degree both Sat & Sun of Memorial Day weekend, which was cold enough to freeze out the majority of our blueberry blossoms, we sustained a 95% loss of fruit. With approx. 2,500 mature bushes and no crop insurance … boy did that ever hurt. Keep up the great work ! Thanks again !
Tom says
Hi Mike and crew. We love hearing what you guys are up to and would put a membership to good use.

Hi Mike,
My name is Joe, I have a vast interest in the propagation of cuttings. I have had a interest in doing this for years just never had the time when my family was young. I had a tree nursery for many years. I dug and sold many different kinds of pine and shade trees. Have done a lot of landscaping. Now that I can obtain the knowledge from a pro I think I am ready for the next step . The Backyard Membership would be a very good step in the direction that I want to be going right now. FORWARD! I look forward to all your e-mails and videos and will continue to grow with each new thing I learn from you. Thank You Mike.

Linda L Valentine says
I am very interested in Mike’s love of plants and flowers. I live in Massachusetts and have many perenials growing all over the place. In back of the pool area I have two Holly bushes (one male, one female) and a Japanese Maple that looks like a huge bush but doesn’t get any bigger. It has a huge amount of beautiful red leaves and looks like an umbrella. In my small garden I have while Bleeding Hearts on each end and several medium sized Hostas. On one end I have a huge Hosta (don’t know what kind) but it is 3 times bigger than the others. On the right side of the pool I have a large area of Ferns but I don’t know what kind they are. They start out tiny and curled up and end up growing out fully and at least 4/5 feet tall before June and then go away before the end of August.
I’m not sure about selling any of these but I am interested in all the knowledge out there about plants. I also have a Lilac tree and it is blooming right at this time. there are hundreds of little Lilac baby trees all around it. Thanks for listening.
Carter says
My plans are to retire off this, this is my absolute passion. Thanks for the opportunity Mike.

This is a great opportunity to be won by someone. I would love to be chosen. Even if I’m not chosen I plan on joining as soon as I can. I’m 67 years young and run a lawn mowing business here in the Louisiana bayou 10 months out of the year. I love growing everything, mostly avocado trees, Asiatic lily’s, and two kinds of shrubs so far.
Carl Bradley says
I’m a closet stick poker for longer than I’ve been on Mikes backyard. I’m a retired victim of 9/11/2001 forced into it even though I would like to still be working and productive. I firmly believe this contest could provide me with an opportunity to fulfill that with a degree of personal satisfaction. If it can happen, I promise there will be even more rooted sticks in my back yard than are there now.
Scott says
I enjoy applying the techniques that you teach and I’m like a kid at Christmas waiting on the next email to come. Staying inspired!!!
Rosemary Longworth says
I’m 84 and pretty much a “shut in” and probably too old to even deserve a membership, but I still plant little things here and there. Just got some aloe vera plants from NM–when I moved north 2 years ago, I forgot to take my aloe vera plants with me, and they froze in my garage that first winter. So now I am trying to get them back — they are so good for a burn or poison ivy or anything that itches. They are amazing! And I got my son to plant an old fashioned rose bush for me this year. I hope I live to see it bloom. Little things like flowers, a few vegetable plants, still give me a thrill. Good luck to someone who will really utilize the membership. Rosemary (I bought a Rosemary plant but it died shortly after arrival.)
Wayne McKay says
Mike, without a doubt what you are doing is fantastic, and I would pay for a membership gladly, but I am a Canadian and I would have to pay a lot more than the 497.00 for a membership. I couldn’t take advantage of all the great deals your members have because I couldn’t buy anything from the US to ship to Canada … So the long and the short of it is … you keep doing what your doing because you are great at what you do, and I will try to read all of your postings and will have to be happy with that.
All the best to you and ALL of your members
God Bless
Roger Morehouse says
Whether I win or not,i enjoy your posts and informatio
Susan G says
Mike, I found you because I needed advice about everything – I’m a total novice, if anything I plant grows, it will be in spite of my efforts. I googled everything, and your posts kept coming up, again and again. Then I decided to take a look at your website because in my spare time I do internet marketing for my sister’s business. About marketing, I am experienced. And with each post I read and email I received, your knowledge from doing and gardening common sense hit home. I totally admire what you do and how you’re doing it. Thank you and your family!

Looking Forward to it…..Thanks!!

I would love, love ,love a free membership! It would be great to learn more and I would love to grow and sell plants on your board. Thank you for a chance to win a membership.
Hugh Payne says
Wow what I could do with a membership is life changing, I started a hobby greenhouse to replant the City lake where I live, budget constraints and available staff , exempted any possibilities from the city’s help. Yes, insanity maybe but I choose to step up to the plate and volunteer my time and plants as a future project of retirement. Had no idea at the time my hobby would become my retirement job so soon.I medically retired 5/31/16 and as of the finances, bill money, all the other stresses we worry about check to check, I have them but no income. I love being in the garden and landscaping so I don’t worry while I’m planting and to be able to get a hold of wholesale starts and expand my beatifications would just be the icing on the cake !!! I believe strongly in giving back and do any way I can, just in a cash flow tight spot for a minute but labor and time I can do. Hope I could be considered for such a generous gift. Thanks so much for your time.
Ellie Estes says

Hi Mike,
I’ve been getting your emails for at least 6 years. I love the helpful hints on plants.Luke clamatis and hydrangea because some you cut back a lot some a little. Thank you for having your site and your emails they are very helpful.
Dawn Fortier says
Hi Mike
I stumbled upon one of your videos two weeks ago while googling something and I am now hooked. I love reading all your articles. You are an encyclopedia of knowledge on plants.
I even obtained the Mother Earth article on you.
I think it is so wonderful of you to share your knowledge.
I’m waiting to view your video on pruning the ‘complicated hydrangea’.
I haven’t found any articles on Wisteria yet. Mine have never bloomed. Last week, I bought a Wisteria ‘Blue Moon’ and it already is full of buds, so I’m excited to see it bloom. Before planting it, though, I’m trying to decide whether to leave it as a vine or make it a tree form.
Thank you!

Yours is the first and only article I have ever read about a wheelbarrow. I couldn’t get along without mine. Having that wheeled burden-bearer around saves me lots of agonizing labor.

I’m a 71 year old lady and I live alone. I love my flowers and flowering trees. The only ones I don’t have that I want is a dogwood and a red bud. I already have 4 lilacs along with some others. I love the way my yard looks and smells when everything is blooming.
I’d sure love to win that free membership because, living on a fixed income, and a small one at that, I don’t really have the money to purchase a membership. Hope I win.

I read your emails with my home care patient – I have been looking for a fun part time job I can do from home to spend more time with my family. I know very little about plants so this would be a total new experience. I decided to go ahead and post to enter your contest and see what happens. If meant to be it will be.
Diana Ringenbach says
Years ago I visited your plant sale and my sister laughed at me and asked me why I bought that “stick”. Well, the following year, she was amazed at what it looked like – just beautiful !!! I showed her. I have since moved to North Carolina and still love your advice about plants and gardening. I wish I had your talent (and the time) to be able to do what you do. I would LOVE to win a free membership !!!!! Diana
Marilynn Wright says
I used to get your newsletter. Loved it. Don’t know if I unsubscribed by mistake or what. Would just love a membership.

I’m a professional horticulture person, and I’ve relied your advice a few years now. You always post good information and it’s enjoyable to read, so thank you! You know what you’re talking about and I think it’s great what you’ve created here and allowed other people to do by your example and guidance.
I’ve always worked for employers doing various plant-related stuff, but ever since I found your site I can’t shake the idea of working for myself. I just love to grow plants, always have. It’s really that simple, so I know I’d love to make this dream a reality.
I feel like it’s time for a change, hopefully sooner than later. But whenever I take the plunge, I know I won’t have to do it alone and learn everything the hard way. Yes, I know a lot about plants, but not a lot about running a production nursery in my backyard, or about turning that into a profit. It’s great to know that you and the other growers in the Business Center are there to help me do it right, and to start me down the path to real success.
Josh Maynard says
Mike,
I don’t think you mentioned when the random drawing will take place. Will it be Jine 1st when the memberships are opened?

It is the best feeling growing plants for free! Thanks Mike

Mike: I have been reading your posts & emails for the past 10 years. Sometimes I doubt you about how much money can be made with this system. But I’m still growing plants & making cuttings on my own. I wish I could afford to invest in your system. I love growing plants but haven’t sold any yet. Maybe just too scared to do so. Like, what if they die for the customer. I need more assurance from you that I can do it. If I were to win your system, I don’t know what I’d do. But thanks for being a friend to all us people.
Colleen Belsey says
Greetings from Alberta, Canada! I believe I can benefit even more from a Membership; already benefiting so much from your articles and videos. Please let me know if your Document from the Coffee Shop when you started is still available; sadly, I lost it when my computer crashed. It is very important to me. And Thank-you, thank-you for all you do! I, too, am just in the planning stages to getting started!

Have already sourced my coarse sand (Free for the loading) and found a source for very cheap Fir Bark compost, mill direct, Might be a little late in the NorCal area to take cuttings, but have collected some anyway, (also free) and am going to practice strip, dip and stick. Have been reading and watching everything I can find on your business model/system, and suddenly it occured to me that a couple we attend church with started a home nursery a year or 2 ago. What they are doing sounded strangely like your system, I asked her about it this evening and sure enough, they are members and business is thriving. I am super excited to get started. Also am exploring propagation and providing native species for re-vegetation/restoration projects in our area.

Had to choose my emotional well-being over my job recently and picked up gardening as therapy while trying to decide the next avenue to take in my life. I am no stranger to hard work and recently rekindled my love for working outdoors. I have read many of Mike’s postings and am 100% ready to start a new venture in selling plants. This would be a great gift!

I have been reading your newsletter and passing along pertinent information to all my friends.
Since I am only months away from 80, I am reluctant to spend any of my wife’s savings on my hobby which I may or may not be around to really recoup the investment. I would surely like to be the winner of a free entrance to your trading site.
I have sold a few plants on ebay (which involves more postage than profit) and a few at yard sales so I know the basics thanks to Mike.
Patrick says
I live on a postage stamp with very little room for Yardening.. Reading the adventures of Mike in the garden has reignited my zest and caused me to look at my small square of dirt in new and different ways. I see fences as trellis and have built Yarden boxes where I place cuttings and grow gardening plants. I’ve had Yard sales where people were much more interested in my plants and cuttings than the “rummage” items. I have turned My landscape into Roses, Blueberries ,currents, Rhubarb, hops, graps, and more. The “useless” median between the sidewalk and street is now raised bed gardens. What’s even better is when I prune my plants most everything is used for propagating instead of heading to the trash heep.. This year Virginia asked me to grow fewer T0matos, Not a chance! I’m not slowing down now.. Thanks for the kick start to my backside.
Lou Lentine says
I meet Mike at one of his sales about 3 years ago and was very impressed, I then join the email list and learning everyday, but most of all I’m “staying inspired”. Thanks Mike for all you do!

Anyway, thanks for all of the advice that you offer and keeping us inspired!
Thanks,

I love your web site and also everything about your growing system. I would be thrilled to win your contest for the Back Yard Growers site. I have been working on my rooting technique and truly believe I have Mastered the art of rooting cuttings. I started out just doing Privet, but have blossomed into Azalea, Rose, Geranium, Crape Myrtle, and White Bleeding Heart. I had also tried seed cultivation, but never had any luck with it. Last fall, I bought 2 8′ x 20″ Heat Mats and in February, began sowing seeds. I ended up with 12 varieties of Tomato and 10 varieties of Peppers (3 were Datil, Bhut Jaloki, and Carolina Reaper. Since I had never had any luck, my timing was way off. The Peppers took about 6 weeks to germinate, but they were started after the Tomato plants. By the time all the seedlings were ready to set outside, it was the end of March. April was a washout, due to my wifes Doctor Appointments and other pre planned events, It was Mid May when they were ready to sell. I have close to 1,000 Tomato/Pepper plants that may not be able to be sold. Here in Florida, anything from June to 1st of September will be scorched by the high temps. I was forced to retire after 34 years working for the Department of Defense, here in Jacksonville, FL, due to Migraines and other issues (Persian Gulf Syndrome from Civilian Service in Desert Shield/Storm), so been concentrating on my Nursery Business. Thank you for all your help in the past and look forward to your columns in the future. V/R…

I would be interested in winning the membership, due to the fact that I lost my job 3 days before Christmas 2015, due to a truck accident. Since the accident, I have been working on expanding some of the perennials that I already have,( from my butterfly gardening) and been trying to get new ones to work with. I brought in about$ 675.00 on my first sale during a town wide yard sale, and am trying to find other places where I can sell. It sounds like the membership would be valuable in my attempt to expand, in both knowledge, and supplies.
Thanks’

Since I live in Southeast Texas, 50 miles north of Houston, I have a lo-o-o-ng growing season. My challenge is the extreme heat of summer, but thankfully I have lots of trees to keep my plants partly shaded from the hot sun.
I am really looking forward to becoming a part of your ‘family’ of plant growers. Hope to get to Perry one of these days to meet you in person.

I believe that as long as we keep learning we never get old. We may slow down a little, but that from the weight of the knowledge we gain as we live. Mike has so much to teach and I really want to thank him because my younger relatives think I’m really smart. I’m honest and tell them that it’s info that I learn from Mike. Dear Mike
I would love to be able to win the grand prize of the Membership, I would like to tell you some hard luck story to make me sound the most in need but in truth I do don’t have such a story.
I work at a animal sanctuary I also have 2 rescue donkeys both being just about a year old now. Way to young to vote for yours to become President of the United States this time around.
I would like to become a member of your back yard growers for 2 reasons
1 – To be able to earn a income for myself.
2 -To have enough money left over to pay towards the on going vet bills at work also to be able to work there as a volunteer.
As I said not a hard luck story just a honest one,

Hi Mike-
My name is Amy. I recently lost my job of 8 years, so instead of going crazy waiting for employers to call me back, I started growing small plants from seeds. I live in Zone 10b where it is hot and humid right now. I am growing Mexican Sunflowers, Tithonia Torch variety and morning glories, purchased at the local dollar store. I have around 87 plants in just a few weeks.
Finding you and your program has really inspired me during this tough time. Just wanted to say thank you. Not sure what I would have done with all my unexpected free time if it wasn’t for your inspiration to start planting.
Thanks again.

I have been watching your videos, reading posts, emails, and applying what I have learned over the last year. I have only done this for personal use to expand my small wild raspberry patch. I am saving up the money to join, but have had several set backs with vehicle problems. Any way, I am looking forward to this season and good luck to all the growers and wish you a prosperous year.

I would love to be able to buy / sell rooted cuttings to other members here in Canada as well as around the word. I have saved up some money this past winter to purchase some stock nursery plants and trees to start my own backyard nursery. I have also done some re landscaping with the new plants and tree and my neighbor and us are in kinda a competition to out do each other in our landscapes. He has also asked for help at times and I free give the advice to him that I have learned from http://www.freeplants.com to help him with his endeavors.

I am fascinated with your recent message about the deciduous azalea. I live in western NC and I have some of these native azaleas on my property. I never thought about harvesting the seeds but this year I will! As you mentioned, these are nearly impossible to propagate from cuttings! I have tried many times but no luck! I have thought of trying to root by air layering but this year I will harvest the seeds. My beauty in the front is decades old and produces flame red-orange blooms and they are fragrant! The local folks call these “honeysuckle bushes.” They are truly spectacular! After all the other azaleas are done, they put on quite a show. They bloom about the same time as some of the rhododendrons. I first encountered a deciduous azalea in 1996. My daughter’s prom date brought her a flower that was fragrant, delicate and the color was a pinkish peach. I asked him about it and asked him if I could get a cutting. He said he had been unable even to “bring it down the mountain” let alone share with anyone! I was impressed with its rarity but at the time, I didn’t know what it was. It wasn’t until we bought our house, moved in and the azalea in front bloomed for us for the first time, that I noticed the similarity. Eventually I learned more about these native “flame azaleas” (the other name that local folks use to describe them). Hope you find this interesting and thanks for your recent information about these lovely plants!
