Hi Mike,
Two things I’m confused about.
1: When to use sand versus when to use potting soil for cuttings (which is where I’m starting out)
and
2, Where do you sign up for the 30 days for 7 bucks that you mention? I only see the full option. THank you!
Mike says
Stephen,
Sand is used for softwood cuttings because you have to mist them or wet them often. Potting soil seems to work better for hardwood cuttings because they get a lot less attention and the soil holds more moisture. I’ll put two links below.
I really don’t run or even own any of this anymore so my son Duston sets the pricing. I just looked at this link, https://secure.backyardgrowers.com/business-center and it appears that you can get 30 days for $9.97. So it went up a few bucks but I assure you, still an incredible value and I spend a lot of time in the members area.

You can search hardwood cuttings on this site for more info on that.

hey there,
I’m new here, bought the book easy plant propagation because I want to start some hardwood cuttings. a little confused because on page 53, there’s a whole paragraph that says do not plant cuttings upside down, then on page 54 its underlined and in bold letters to plant the cuttings upside down lol. maybe I should look at a video. thanks for any help
Mike says
Kels,
Let’s simplify this. There is an upside down method that is only used to store them for the winter and to get them to callous up. But you’re really better off just sticking the right side up either in the soil, or in a pot of potting soil. I’ve had great results either way. That’s when it’s important to make sure they are right side up because you are leaving them there. Here’s a video and thank you for buying the book. Your donkeys are as entertaining as my goofy goats!
Could you pl;ease tell me about propagating shantung maple. I’m in north TX and we are just now getting some cold. Trees have been a deep scarlet –now turning yellow. Absolutely beautiful! I’m loving them and want one. . . or maybe a dozen!!
Would hardwood cuttings work with them?? Thank you so much for your advice and experience.
Mike says
Brenda,
Shauntung maple are not likely to work from hardwood cuttings but will from softwoods or seeds. https://mikesbackyardnursery.com/2015/01/easy-summertime-plant-propagation-techniques-can-home/
