Mike McGroarty began his career working in nurseries and starting his own landscaping business and has developed his own personal style of landscaping.
You can hire a landscaper to design a beautiful yard for you but it doesn’t have to end there. You can add your own personal touch to your yard and even re-use and recycle items from your home.
If you are looking for a challenge, you can design and build your very own pond or fountain. But if you are like me, there are easier ways to decorate. I have found large stones in my yard and created a rock wall and also a rock garden. You can turn an unsightly potting shed into a whimsical outhouse. Add lighting to a certain focal point plant in your garden.

I am refreshing the landscape beds at the front of my house. The old shrubs have been removed but I saw your recommendation of getting 10 inches of top soil. This would raise the beds above the sidewalk and lawn. How do you keep the soil from washing onto the sidewalk and into the lawn?
Mike says
Don,
I’ve never had an issue with soil washing out of a bed. Mulch, yes, it can wash. You don’t have to use 10″ of topsoil. It’s even a few inches makes a difference. But the beds really should be higher than the lawn and can taper down to the sidewalk.
