A Successful 20 Year Old

How many 20-year-olds that you know can make a claim like this:

A note from one of my customers.  She posted this for all of the new members of The Backyard Grower’s Business Center to see…

“Mike you met Rachel, year before last, she is getting it, at least on a small scale, thinking bigger, today is her 20th birthday and this post I copied from her facebook page.  Enjoy the thinking and for those who are new and wondering does this work,  read her posting of what she did last year off of her plant sales and this kid was so broke in April that she was selling plants off the side of the road to get her electric turned back on. She still is broke that’s your 20’s.  But she is making great progress.”

You’d be surprised how much I’ve learned since I was 18.  Even before 18, when we got grounded we had to read books like rich dad poor dad and write reports about them.   Read a couple books about letting your money work for you and get a set of …amazing teachers (like my parents) and see how far you’ll go.   I currently have 7 beds of pure stock plants for my nursery… as plants grow you cut em up, divide them, re-root them and such and they make hundreds more off one plant.   Think of each of my plants (a couple thousand) times a hundred each over a season…. selling them wholesale for cuttings, (.75) each or retail a bit bigger for 5 to 10 bucks each… I know what I’m doing and year alone I put a new roof, siding, windows, and insulation in my house.   That was only two months out of the year.   I’m doing it full time now…. do the math.   Three years from now I WILL have employees under me.   I don’t dabble in relish and foods… I do it big.   I’m a homeowner and a certified nursery owner.   Your lack of belief is that much more drive for me to blow you out of the water, and trust me I will.   I’m not all talk, I have plans and I have the drive.   Look at my entire family.   They have all gone far, and you know what?   That’s not going to change with me…
Rachel’s mom is one of my longtime customers and she has a very successful Backyard Nursery.   This is her response to what Rachel posted on Facebook;  “This is a conversation with several of her friends, I just copied part of it but I hope new people get the picture she is trying to convey to her buddies. The first part of the post is I use to ground them and to get un-grounded they had to read and do reports on books that I assigned that had good ground works for the average person.

That’s amazing! I want to own my own nursery/garden store someday. I’m 18, from PA, and have been interested in (mostly native) plants since I was 16. Someday I want to propogate various species of Ladys Slippers and Ladys Tresses and a ton of other plant species, too.

Hi, I’ve been reading your gardening advice since finding your site 8 yrs ago after a nasty vehicle accident, 8 or 9 surgeries (lost count) and lots of free time recuperating. Still not and likely never will be as before. Takes me a week to get done what I used to in a day, and twice my ‘overdoing it’ put me back in hospital for short stays.
This spring I’m going to try again to get a ‘backyard grow system’ going.
So, I’ll be bugging you for advise since memory isn’t so well from the TBA. Wish me luck!!
And thanks for your emails.packed w/good dirty info!
    I liked the goats.

Looking forward to grounding my 7 and 9 year old in the coming years and following your example! What a good way to get those “life skills” books read that they’ll never be assigned at school.

Damn! To think of all that potential I lost when I was grounded as a teenager.

I was thinking about starting some plants using grow lights in my cellar. What do you think about it? Zone 4 Apple Valley, MN. Want to do something quick growing that I can sell this summer.

You can grow some herbs from seed , or vegetables for that matter . Once you have plants you can multiply some of them by cuttings. Examples, Basil, easy to root , also tomatoes also very easy to root.
