Mulching Our Japanese Maple Beds

Mulching our Japanese maple beds.  Audio is really bad, it was windy and then from out of now where a random clanking tractor drove behind Amber with the camera!  Only in the country does that happen!

Hi Mike, I have done my Japanese Maple a horrible injustice, awful leaf burn! I just have a question….or 3:
Can I help it recover? , I’m a water person and I try hard not to and yes sometimes I did mist it water the whole baby…. My husband gave it to me for my birthday and I am so sad for the damage I’ve caused. The only information I got with it was to protect it from strong wind and that it liked like water , but not soggy!… But the misting done it in. I looks helpless and sad but still has redish and green leaves…Can I help it recover???? (Alabama)

      Jackie,

My biggest concern is how wet is the soil around the roots? How long has the tree been planted? If it’s only been planted for a short time you can raise it out of the hole and replant in a hole with dry soil. Do not plant it too deep. Just one inch of soil over the top of the root ball, then about 2″ of mulch. Once planted it should only need water once a week, twice if hot.

Other than that don’t fertilize, just give the tree a chance to recover. Next spring it should be fine.

Mike Ithink your site is great, I have a question re mulch, I have access to a large amount of mulch from tree fellers, they are mainly firs, I’m in the UK, i use the mulch on my allotment and in my business, mainly for play areas, paths or similar, what about putting it in beds and borders as it is acidic and will change the soil PH?

      Mike,

I think it will be fine, thousands of people use tree trimming mulch for mulching purposes. I use it in my nursery in bed areas.

Do you need to be concerned that it isn’t treated and perhaps has termites in it?

          Gail,

I’m not concerned at all. When mulch is piled up at the mill and at the supply yard it gets very, very hot inside the pile. In all of my years doing landscaping I’ve yet to ever find a living thing inside of a mulch pile because of the heat that the mulch has seen.

    Mike,
I am a member of the BYG and loving it. I am curious about the little
red JM in the “Mondays with Mike” video about mulching the JMs. Where can I get ahold of these?

In response to my previous comment, I would at least like to know how to spell the name so that I can search for them. 🙂
