390-Year-Old Bonsai Tree Survived An Atomic Bomb

Updated : August 7, 2015

This 390 year old Japanese White Pine was donated to the National Arboretum in Northeast Washington for the Arboretum’s National Bonsai and Penjing Museum.

Think about it! This tree has survived since the 16th century and also survived an atomic bomb!

The bonsai tree’s history is being honored this week, as Thursday marks the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. But visitors can see the tree as part of the museum’s permanent collection throughout the year.

I absolutely enjoy your intestinal fortitude when it comes to gardening. You tell it like it is. Most people, that have a show on TV, act like they know everything and are way beyond any possible knowledge that a simple man like me can even present any thoughts that might possibly be a better version of what you claim to be the gospel. It is what it is. Mother Nature can do whatever it feels like doing at any given time. I`ve had the pleasure of watching plants grow where they shouldn`t. and grow like crazy. Yes, we pat ourselves on the back when something grows like it shouldn`t, in a place where they have no idea as to why they are growing like farm grass. I have found that the best way to enjoy gardening is when you teach young kids how to grow and take care of simple plants. The bigger, the better. All of us love to see a plant covered with flowers. I had thoughts today about how amazing it is to watch veggies and fruit trees / bushes grow in Alaskan summers. I`m so thankful to have a sister that has her Master Gardener Badge that she wears proudly. She tells me that I can get my badge for that. When she told me that,,,,I almost hurt my jaw as it dropped and hit the table. She tells me that I`m so very close to have this accolade. Oh, hell yeah! I want that. I want that bad.

I’ve seen this plant (when I was a law student at Georgetown, I used to wander through the Arboretum and the Smithsonian gardens to cheer myself up). It is beautiful. I personally have managed to kill (can’t blame it on weather, because it’s ultimately the gardener’s fault, right?) two bonsai, so I am clearly deadlier than an A-bomb.

I read your story of how you became a nursery owner, etc. Very inspiring. God bless you.

'Blue Angel'hosta is by far one of my favorite blue hostas. A big hosta like this in a perennial bed covers a lot of area and that keeps a ton of weeds at bay! These giant heart shaped leaves are very slug resistant. We have this plant in full sun. With … Read Full Article

‘Big Daddy’ Hosta

'Big Daddy' hosta is one of my favorite big hostas, mostly because it's big, it's blue and it has very interested leaves that are a bit dimpled. Big Daddy hosta gets about 24" tall and 36" wide. It's hardy in zones 3 through 9, the flowers are blends of … Read Full Article
