Meet Us at the Chapel!
Come on over and visit with us for a spell at the Hillbilly Chapel Farm. The Amy family, Pa (Shawn), Ma (Carrie), and the youngins, look forward to seeing old friends and making the acquaintance of new ones. We’ll treat y’all the same, and once you’ve been here, you’ll be on the ‘old friends’ list for good! But, sayin’ and doin’ is two different things, so ya better come see for yourself.
In all honesty, but depending on your own interpretation, we’re only partial hillbillies. It’s a relative term, ya know. But, we are located in beautiful rural, northwestern Pennsylvania, get our mail from the local village of Townville, we live on a country dirt road with a passel of kids, and more than one customer has referred to our location as God’s country. So, if that makes us hillbillies, we’re proud to be ’em.
Our nursery is really only 2/10 of a mile off of State Highway 408, near Townville, Pennsylvania, an out-of-the-way spot halfway between Meadville and Titusville. We’re just 20 minutes from both of those towns and within one hour of cities like Erie, Warren, and Grove City in Pennsylvania, Andover in Ohio, and Findley Lake in New York. Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo are each about 2 hours away, and we’ve actually had friends visit us from that far.
The Hillbilly Tale
Now both Carrie and Shawn grew up in this area and were introduced to the beauty of agriculture on our grandparents’ farms. Gardening has always been an enjoyable pastime for us, so when the Good Lord brought our prior vocational pursuit to an end, we agreed that nursery work might be the wonderful new plan He had in mind. We considered purchasing an apple orchard, but limited funds and high risk swayed us from that venture.
Then we stumbled across an advertisement for the website http://www.freeplants.com where we learned about a low start-up cost way to build a nursery business. Following the simple methods taught by Mike McGroarty, we were able to start a nursery right in our own backyard that the whole family could be a part of. As our first order of business, we asked the kids to offer suggestions for a farm name. After some campaigning we took a vote, and the Hillbilly Chapel Farm was so named and established. That was the spring of 2017, and in each year since we have enjoyed growth in our business, growing plants for our business, and the business of growing closer as a family.
The Nitty Gritty
Our vision is to make beautiful plants that are affordable for everyone.
As we said, we love growing green things. We also understand the
challenge of caring for your family and the dream of providing better
things for them and your community. We remember the frustration of
wanting to beautify our landscape but being very limited by the price of
plants at the store. So, we offer a wide range of plants, most selling
for about $5. At the Hillbilly Chapel Farm it’s Beautiful Plants at
Heavenly Prices.
We carry trees, perennials, and edibles with special seasonal sales for fruit trees, day lilies, and mums. We open the season in April with fruit trees (apples, peaches, and pears) and perennials. We continue through June offering everything from grandma’s hydrangeas, potentillas, and forsythias to some unique columbine, spirea, and bee balm. Oh, and don’t forget the herbs, grapes, raspberries, thornless blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries. In July, we take a break but make time to sell daylilies when they’re in bloom. Beginning in late August, we start up again adding big, beautiful mums that you can’t find in the store, and we sell those like crazy right into October.
The Sum of Things
At the Hillbilly Chapel Farm we cherish the precious simple things:
family & friends, hard work, God’s creation, honesty, good
conversation, a handshake. We want you to feel welcome at the Chapel.
Things are fairly laid-back, quiet, and easygoing, so come take your
time perusing through the nursery. What’s the point in living out in
the country if you can’t enjoy it, right? Many customers comment on the
peace they feel while they’re here. We also want you to know we’ll do
our best for you: good prices, beautiful plants, and if we don’t have
something you’re looking for we’ll try to get it or direct you to other
local sellers.
We’re open from April to July in the spring and from September to November in autumn. Hours of operation are Thursday through Saturday from 10-6, and we also sell by appointment. Purchases are convenient, accepting cash, check, or credit card. Check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hillbillychapelfarm/.

Hi Mike,
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Question, how do you know what geographic “zone” you are in, as you referred to for the timing. Im in Southern California, LA and there’s a beautiful rose shrub in my yard I’d like to propagate. Should I just count 6 weeks from the first bloom?
Mike says
Gina,
Not from the bloom but from the time the leaves appear count six weeks from that time.
