i’d like to start a backyard garden nursery in my area lake wales/winter haven. Someone I know just bought a home with a large backyard, it has a lot of yucca plants, avacados, citrus and mangoes and many other plants. Im in the process of putting them in pots and start a fun business. This is my first step to post a comment

I have tried unsuccessfully to grow gardenias. I just purchased another one. Where can I get soil for it? It will be in a pot. What advice can you give me?

      Sue,
I’m certainly no expert on gardenias, but I would think a good quality potting mix that drains well should do the trick. With well draining mixes you have to water more often, but that’s better than soil that holds moisture for a long time.

Check out my new website for directions; also, after all this cold is gone, hopefully about mid-March, my selection of plants will increase, including tropicals and exotics.

My backyard nursery is located in Port Charlotte. Located on the border of zones 9A & 9B. I grow lots of different things but mostly Crape Myrtle. I have about 50 varieties of them in my back yard. I’d love to do Maple but its just too warm here.

Try the native red maples which tend to grow so well in wet or dry areas of South Florida.

I am in Jax. FL and have been growing these for years. After about 20 years, I have finally lost my waterfall maple. The Bloodgood does okay but not spectacular. The BG’s are in shade. I have seen a few here that are huge.

I’m not far from New Port Richey, I’m in Land O Lakes just down the road. I would like to know how well Japanese Maples do in our grow zone 9B. I know they like cooler weather But how well do they stand up to the heat of our summers?

Ray, 9B is pretty warm for Japanese maples. There are a couple of varieties that do well in warmer climates and we are going to do an article about this in the near future. Keep an eye on http://japanesemaplelovers.com/, we’ll have some interesting discussions going on there soon.
