Here at Mike’s Plant Farm in Perry, Ohio we root tens of thousands of cuttings. Mostly flowering shrubs but we also do some evergreens as well. But in addition to that I buy plugs from wholesale suppliers that we can grow on and resell at a nice profit. I share my wholesale sources with Our Members, but I cannot share them here publicly.
The PPAF you see in the plant name means that a Plant Patent has been applied for and it will soon be illegal to propagate this plant. But when I buy them I pay a small royalty and I also buy a plant tag showing that they plant is protected.
So why do I buy plants like this if I can’t propagate them? Because the wholesale price on a plant like this is really, really low, often less than one dollar, and I only have to grow them for a few weeks before they are saleable. And they help me sell all of the other plants that I grow from cuttings. Those plants are almost all profit for me!
When I root a cutting and later sell that plant my only costs are maybe 22 cents for a container and another 50 cents for the potting soil that goes into the container.
