My neighbor Richard gave me several Magolias this spring. They were all young plants but this ‘Sunsation’ bloomed like crazy despite it’s small size.
Things you should know about ‘Sunsation’ Magnolia . . .
- The blooms are a striking, beautiful yellow color.
- This ornamental tree is hardy in zones 5 thru 9.
- It blooms in the spring.
- It does well in full sun or some shade.
- This small tree will get 20 to 30 feet tall.
- And it will grow to a width of about 8 to 10 feet.
Can it be grown from cuttings? I doubt it, the one that I was given is was budded to a ‘Yellow Latern’ Magnolia seedling. That tell me that it has to be budded or grafted to a Magnolia seedling in order to reproduce it.
Is this plant patented? Not to my knowledge. I did some research and found no evidence of it patented or the name being trademarked.
Where can you buy one? Probably only online unless you get really lucky and find one locally. Do I sell this plant? Not at this time.

Probably never. When I looked I could only fine one very expensive one. I’d like to bud some eventually but I don’t even have any root stock to do that with.
That’s a beautiful Magnolia. The shrub behind it shows it off very well. What is the name of the shrub?

No, they are really hard to find. I really need to plant out some seedlings so I have something to bud onto.

Just wondering if you could keep pruning the magnolia to keep it relatively small for a garden with not that much room.

I say you can. This one has been in this bed for several years and we’ve easily kept it manageable.
I believe all these spectacular flowering types are crosses of Asian soulangeana and our native acuminata. Prices right now are out of sight, as in $80 for a 1 gal. If you buy it in winter or very early spring, that same size probably will be $30 🙂
How do I get my magnolia to bloom again. Moved it 2 years ago lots of leaves no flowers?

Just be patient, don’t fertilize it. Plants know what to do if we just leave them alone.

I’ve had several grape vines & twice now several of them get clusters of grapes but they never mature, soon after the clusters appear they disappear, what am I doing wrong?

Mike, that person who wanted grape vines.. How about just layering by burying the mother vine with a few inches of soil? By spring they should have plenty plants

We live in Ontario and we have several “yellow bird” magnolias. Sometimes get nipped by the early frost, but it will bloom again if taken care of mid summer.
I used to sell them and have one myself over 20 ft …just gorgeous…I live on PEI …no problem with it at all

Mike, I am one of your followers and I hope I put myself in as a member. I need to know if I can order one of those Yellow Magnolias and have it shipped to me. I used to have a Yellow Magnolia, but, I planted it too close to a White Magnolia which I did not know how big the White one was going to get. WOW it grew about 50 ft. tall and completely blocked my Yellow one . Need I tell you the Yellow one didn’t any sun after that so I had my husband cut it down and I would like one I could plant far from any other trees in complete sun. How much would you charge me for one of these Yellow Mags.? Do you sell them?????

No, I have none to sell. Pretty rare, only one grower around here grows them and they are wholesale only. Sorry.

Thank you for all of the information shared. You are a very good teacher. I’m just getting started. The notice of how to root grapevines really grabbed my attention. I have an over 35 year old concord grapevine that I made amazing spread from. My neighbor planted crepe myrtles right behind it blocking the sun and I haven’t had grapes or jam for 3 years. I’m ready to try to root it. Also I am very intrigued by the idea of growing my own small plants to sell. I have white and pink dogwoods. A lilac bush. and birch trees.
